I packed an overnight bag, left behind the dinner I had bought and the table I had set, and spent Christmas Eve somewhere no one expected. Just after midnight, my phone rang. “Claire,” David said, sounding stunned. “Why are you on the news?”
“That you were trying to turn us against her. He said you only helped us out because you wanted us to owe you.”
Then Sarah took the phone.
“Claire, I owe you a massive apology.”
“For what?”
“For believing him.”
David had told her our marriage was quietly falling apart. He claimed I was emotionally unstable, financially reckless, and planning to force Ethan and Chloe to choose sides.
He had asked Sarah not to contact me because he said I would retaliate.
“He showed me bank statements,” she continued. “They show you transferred $52,400 from your savings to Safe Harbor.”
“I never transferred a dime of that money.”
