My husband and I bought a box of unclaimed packages for fun — the last one had his name on it from 15 years ago, and he begged, “Don’t open it”

For weeks, Bennett and I had been watching videos of people buying abandoned or unclaimed packages and opening them at home. Most of what they found was useless, but every now and then someone pulled out an expensive watch or a brand-new tablet, and Bennett became convinced we were one cardboard box away from early retirement.

“We’ll probably get twelve phone chargers and somebody’s ugly sweater,” I told him.

“Or a diamond bracelet.”

“You said that about the storage-unit show too.”
