My Son Mowed Every Lawn for $0—Then Two Police Cars Stopped Outside Our Home

Two police cars stopped in front of my central Ohio home at 11:42 on a late-August morning, and my stomach dropped. My twelve-year-old son, Justin, was in the kitchen eating leftover pasta when both officers began walking toward our door. I opened it before they could knock and forced myself to ask what had happened. One officer wanted to know whether Justin was the boy who had spent the summer mowing lawns for elderly neighbors. Justin entered the hallway holding a fork, his face shifting from surprise to confusion. When the officer mentioned Mr. and Mrs. Chen, Justin’s first question was not whether he was in trouble—it was, “Are they okay?”
