I let a homeless man with a leg brace sleep on our couch for one night because my son couldn’t stop looking at him shivering outside. The next morning, I left for work expecting him to be gone before I came home. But when I opened the door that evening, I froze. He was still inside—and what he had done to my apartment while I was gone made me go pale.

It started outside a grocery store on one of the coldest nights we’d had that winter.

My son, Nolan, and I had gone in for milk, cereal, and whatever vegetables I could stretch into meals for the rest of the week. I had just worked ten hours at the assisted living center, my feet hurt, and all I wanted was to get home, heat up leftovers, and put Nolan to bed.

Then he stopped walking.
