“You have to move out of our country house,” Mom said at dinner, casually setting her fork down like she was asking me to pass the salt. “Your brother and his wife need it more!”

I sat frozen, my grip tightening around my glass until my knuckles turned white. My sister-in-law, Chloe, didn’t even have the decency to look me in the eye; she just smirked into her wine glass while my brother, Mark, kept his head down, pretending to be intensely interested in his steak.

“Excuse me?” I managed to choke out, my voice trembling with rising anger. “Mom, I’ve lived in the cottage for three years. It was an abandoned, rotting shell when I took it over. I put fifty thousand dollars of my own hard-earned savings into renovating it, not to mention hundreds of hours of manual labor!”
