Scott Neeson once lived a life that many people would associate with extraordinary success.
He had risen through the entertainment industry and worked as a Hollywood executive. His career provided the kind of lifestyle that came with expensive possessions, international travel and financial security.
Then a trip to Cambodia changed his priorities.
While visiting Phnom Penh, Neeson encountered families living in extreme poverty and children trying to
survive in extraordinarily difficult conditions.
For him, it was impossible to simply forget what he had seen and return to life as usual.
The contrast was overwhelming.
Back in the United States, Neeson had built a successful career and enjoyed the rewards that came with it. In Cambodia, he had seen children whose daily concerns were completely different — food, safety, healthcare and the possibility of receiving an education.
Eventually, he made a decision that would reshape his entire life.
He left Hollywood behind and moved his focus to Cambodia.
Neeson founded the Cambodian Children’s Fund in 2004, beginning an effort to provide support and education to disadvantaged children and their families.
What started with a relatively small number of children grew over the years.
The work expanded beyond simply providing meals or getting children into classrooms.
Education became a major part of the mission because it offered young people an opportunity to change the direction of their lives.
Healthcare, family assistance and community programs also became important parts of the organization’s work.
For Neeson, this represented an enormous personal transformation.
He had exchanged the world of movie studios and luxury for days spent working with communities facing poverty.
His story attracted international attention partly because of what he chose to leave behind.
But the possessions themselves aren’t really the most important part of the story.
The bigger story is what he chose to build afterward.
Helping one child receive an education can influence an entire family. Helping hundreds can begin changing a community.
And when that work continues year after year, the impact can reach thousands of people.
