According to Casper’s owner, John Wierwille, Casper went after the coyotes.
What followed was an intense confrontation that reportedly lasted around half an hour. By the end, eight coyotes were dead and the others had fled.
Most importantly, all five sheep survived unharmed.
But Casper had paid a terrible price.
Casper Disappeared
After the fight, Casper was nowhere to be found.
His owner discovered blood and pieces of his tail, making it clear that the dog had suffered serious injuries.
The family searched for him and asked others in the community to help.
Then, two days later, something remarkable happened.
Casper came home.
He was alive — but badly wounded.
His injuries were severe enough that there were initially concerns about whether he could recover. He suffered major wounds to his neck and side, and part of his tail was lost.
A Community Helped Save Him
Casper required extensive veterinary treatment.
LifeLine Animal Project became involved in his recovery, while public attention around his story helped generate support for his care.
His recovery took time, but the young guardian dog survived.
And his story didn’t end there.
More than a year later, Casper was reported to be fully healed and back with his sheep. In 2024, he won the American Farm Bureau Federation’s People’s Choice Pup award after receiving the most votes in the public competition.
For the people who followed his recovery, it was a fitting ending.
Casper had simply been doing the job livestock guardian dogs have performed for generations: protecting the animals entrusted to them.
But on that night in Georgia, he demonstrated just how far that instinct could go.
Five sheep walked away unharmed.
Casper nearly didn’t.
And somehow, two days after disappearing while severely wounded, he found his way back home. ❤️🐾
