Grandma’s Old-Fashioned Apple Pie – A Timeless Homemade Classic

There are some recipes that never need to be trendy. A warm, homemade apple pie is one of them.

With tender apples, cinnamon, brown sugar and a beautifully golden crust, this old-fashioned apple pie brings the comforting flavors of a traditional American kitchen straight to your table.

Whether you’re making dessert for Sunday dinner, a family gathering, Thanksgiving, or simply because you have fresh apples in the kitchen, this recipe is an easy classic worth keeping.

Ingredients

  • 6 cups peeled and sliced apples
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • Pie crust for a 9-inch double-crust pie
  • 1 tablespoon butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1 egg mixed with 1 tablespoon water, optional for brushing

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).

Place the sliced apples in a large mixing bowl. Add the granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg and lemon juice. Toss everything gently until the apples are evenly coated.

Place the bottom pie crust into a 9-inch pie dish. Spoon the apple mixture into the crust, spreading the apples evenly. Dot the top with small pieces of butter.

Cover with the second crust. You can use a full crust with several small slits for steam or create a traditional lattice top.

Seal and crimp the edges. For an extra golden finish, lightly brush the top crust with the egg-and-water mixture.

Bake at 425°F for about 15 minutes. Then reduce the temperature to 375°F (190°C) and continue baking for approximately 35–45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling.

If the edges begin browning too quickly, loosely cover them with aluminum foil.

Remove the pie from the oven and allow it to cool for at least 2 hours before slicing. This gives the filling time to thicken.

Serve it as it is, or add a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an extra comforting dessert.

A Classic Worth Making Again
