I was 17 when my younger brother, Eli, made my prom dress from our late
mother’s jeans.
Mom di:ed when I was 12, and Eli was 10. Our father remarried 2 years later,
then di:ed unexpectedly from a heart attack the following year.
Dad’s will named our stepmother, Vanessa, as our guardian, and the court
approved the arrangement. A separate family trust named her as successor
trustee, giving her control of the money our parents had set aside for our
education, care, and major milestones.
After Dad di:ed, Vanessa took control of everything-the bills, the accounts, an
even our contact with relatives. She blocked our aunt Julia’s number on our
phones and told us that Julia no longer wanted anything to do with us. At the
