Part 1: The Boy Behind My Ex-Wife’s Door
Seven years after my divorce, I stood on my ex-wife’s porch on Christmas Eve with snow melting across the shoulders of my old Army coat. I had come to apologize for believing a lie that destroyed our marriage, but the moment Emily opened the door, a little boy ran up behind her wearing red Christmas socks and looked at me with my own blue-gray eyes.
“Mom, the star fell off again,” he said, holding a crooked cardboard ornament. Then he noticed me and tilted his head in the same suspicious way I had done in every childhood photograph.
Emily’s face lost its color. She placed one hand on the boy’s shoulder and asked him to return to the living room, but he remained beside her, studying the stranger who had appeared on their porch with a wrapped wooden ornament.
“Who are you?” he asked.
