Raising Mason alone taught me that some lessons can be explained to a child
while others are learned simply by watching how you treat people.
His father disappeared before Mason was born. There was no dramatic
goodbye or final argument. He simply stopped answering my calls.
By the time Mason arrived, I had accepted that every feeding, fever, school
meeting, and late-night emergency would be mine to handle. For years, I
worried about what growing up without a father might do to him.
As it turned out, I should have worried less.
