He rode a motorcycle, played bass in a local band, and had the kind of appearance that made strangers step aside when they saw him coming.

But I had known him since childhood.

He had helped my family countless times. When my first car broke down, Travis fixed it without asking for money. When my father died, he was there to help my mother through one of the hardest periods of her life.

So when my work schedule changed and I could no longer pick up our seven-year-old daughter, Emma, every afternoon, Travis offered to help.

“My rehearsals finish near her school,” he said. “I can walk her home.”

The school checked his identification, approved the arrangement, and added him to Emma’s authorized pickup list.

Emma loved it.

My husband, Ryan, didn’t.

“I don’t want our daughter depending on some biker,” he told me one evening.

“He isn’t some biker,” I replied. “He’s Travis.”

Ryan shook his head.

“There’s something about him I don’t trust.”

For several weeks, everything seemed fine.

Travis picked Emma up on time every afternoon and walked her home.

Then one Tuesday, my phone rang while I was working.

It was Emma’s teacher.

“Can you come to the school immediately?”

My heart dropped.

“Is Emma okay?”

“She’s fine,” the teacher said. “But there’s something you need to see.”

Then she added quietly:

“It’s about the man who picks her up.”

Every warning Ryan had given me suddenly came back.

I rushed to the school.

Emma’s teacher took me to the principal’s office.

When I walked inside, Travis was sitting there.

My stomach tightened.

“What happened?”

Travis looked uncomfortable.

Then he explained.

Emma had recently started asking him why her father didn’t like him.

At first, Travis told her that sometimes adults simply didn’t get along.

But then Emma told him that Ryan had been asking her questions.

Had Travis ever taken her somewhere without permission?

Had he bought her anything?

Had he ever allowed her to do something her father wouldn’t approve of?

And, most importantly, had Travis ever told her to keep a secret?

I turned toward Ryan.

He had apparently been questioning Emma repeatedly.

When Travis finally confronted him privately, he told Ryan that if he had concerns, he should talk to him directly instead of putting Emma in the middle.

Ryan promised he would handle it.

Instead, he secretly removed Travis from the school’s authorized pickup list.

He even told the school that both parents had agreed to the change.

We hadn’t.

Emma was eventually left confused about which adult she was supposed to trust.

Ryan defended himself.

“I was just trying to protect our daughter.”

But Travis responded calmly.

“If that were the case, why did you keep asking her the same questions after she had already answered you?”

Ryan had no answer.

Then the real reason finally came out.

Ryan wasn’t actually afraid of Travis.

He was jealous.

“He’s always there,” Ryan admitted.

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

Ryan’s voice became quieter.

“When your car broke down, he was there.
