And if the rhythm changes the way I think it might—””

Victor interrupted.

“”Nurse Bennett.””
→

“”Unless you’ve quietly acquired a cardiology fellowship during your weekend shifts,”” Victor sneered, stepping into the center of the station, “”I suggest you leave the diagnostics to Dr. Price. Your job is to change the IV bags, chart the vitals, and know your place.””

Dr. Price smirked, and the two residents chuckled beneath their breath.

“”You don’t understand,”” I pressed on, refusing to back down as my chest tightened. “”He has an old right ventricular pacing wire scar and shrapnel track from Helmand Province, 2011. Standard defibrillation vectors will cause tissue burn and trigger recalcitrant ventricular tachycardia. If he codes, you cannot place the apex pad in the standard mid-axillary line. He knows me. If he were awake, he’d tell you himself.””

A beat of stunned silence fell over the station, quickly broken by Mason’s condescending bark of laughter.

“”Did you hear that?”” Mason chuckled, turning to Victor. “”Our tired night-shift nurse claims she’s on a first-name basis with a four-star Pentagon legend. Did you meet him while cleaning bedpans, Nora? Or maybe in a dream?””

Victor shook his head in mock pity. “”That’s enough delusion for one shift, Bennett. Hand your badge to the charge nurse. You’re suspended pending an evaluation for erratic conduct.””

Before I could unclip my badge, the shrill, high-pitched scream of a telemetry alarm pierced the air.

Room 912’s monitor flashed violently: V-TACH / TORSADES DE POINTES – RATE 210.

“”Code Blue, Room 912!”” the intercom blared.

Mason dropped his tablet and sprinted into the room, Victor and the code team hard on his heels. The crash cart clattered through the doorway. On the bed, General Calloway was seizing, his skin mottled gray, his monitor unraveling into a lethal, twisting wave pattern.

“”Charge to 200!”” Mason shouted, snatching the defibrillator paddles. “”Clear the bed! Standard placement!””

“”No! Don’t shock standard!”” I yelled, shoving past the security guards who hesitated just long enough to let me through. “”Push two grams of magnesium sulfate IV push right now! Move the apex pad posterior or you’ll short the conduction bundle!””
“”Get her out of here! Security, remove her!”” Victor bellowed from the doorway.

Mason raised the paddles, ready to fire right across the scarred tissue.
Suddenly, with an agonizing, ragged gasp that sounded like gravel crushing beneath an armored boot, the dying general’s eyes snapped wide open.
His pupils dilated, locking directly onto my face through the sea of blue scrubs.
His chest heaved, fighting through the paralysis of hypoxia. His trembling, veined right arm lifted off the white sheet. With pure, unyielding military discipline carved into his very marrow, his shaking fingers flattened, came to a rigid blade, and rose directly to his right eyebrow.
General Thomas Calloway saluted me.
“”Captain Bennett…”” the general rasped, his voice raw and broken, yet carrying the unmistakable thunder of command. “”Korengal… LZ Valkyrie…””
The entire room froze in utter shock. Mason stood paralyzed, paddles hovering in mid-air. Victor’s jaw dropped so low he looked like he had been struck by lightning. The two military guards snapped to rigid attention at the sound of the general’s voice.
“”Listen to… the combat medic…”” Calloway wheezed, his knuckles whitening as his heart gave out again, his eyes rolling back as the monitor screamed flatline into ventricular fibrillation. “”Listen… to her!””
“”Magnesium, two grams, now!”” I roared, stepping directly between Mason and the bed, shoving the standard paddles aside. “”Switch to posterior-anterior pads! Clear!””
Mason didn’t dare say a word. Pale as a corpse, his hands shook as he dropped the paddles. The pharmacist slammed the magnesium into the IV port while I slapped the adhesive pad behind the general’s shoulder blade, avoiding the old shrapnel scar, and pressed the shock button on the console.
THUMP.
The general’s body arched off the mattress.
For three agonizing seconds, the flat tone echoed through the silent ICU.
Beep… Beep… Beep.
Normal sinus rhythm. Blood pressure climbed back to 110 over 70.
The room was so quiet you could hear the saline dripping through the chamber.
The senior military security officer, a decorated Master Sergeant, stepped into the room. He didn’t look at Victor, and he didn’t look at Mason. He stood directly in front of me, looked down at the nametag on my faded scrubs, and slowly raised his hand in a crisp, reverent salute.
“”Captain Nora Bennett,”” the Sergeant said, his voice thick with emotion. “”Silver Star recipient, 10th Mountain Division. You pulled General Calloway out of a burning Black Hawk under heavy insurgent fire twelve years ago while taking a round to the shoulder. He kept your photo in his office every single day of his command.””
Victor Hale stood frozen in the doorway, trembling, his face flushed with sickening shame. Dr. Price could not bring himself to look at me, staring at the floor as if wishing it would open up and swallow him whole.
I adjusted the general’s oxygen mask, wiped the sweat from his brow, and rested my hand gently on his arm.
“”Rest easy, General,”” I said softly. “”You’re safe now.”””

PART2: General Thomas Calloway.
