Then I made sure that man walked away from Mommy\u2019s car.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cole thought about that. \u201cSo you tricked him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Danny looked at me. \u201cA little.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cole seemed pleased. \u201cThat\u2019s cool.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Danny shook his head. \u201cThat is not the lesson.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We stayed at the gas station another 20 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>I bought Cole a new water bottle.<\/p>\n<p>Bright blue.<\/p>\n<p>Almost identical to the one still somewhere beneath his seat.<\/p>\n<p>Mia got crackers.<\/p>\n<p>I reorganized the groceries.<\/p>\n<p>Danny asked three times whether I was okay to drive.<\/p>\n<p>I said yes every time.<\/p>\n<p>Finally he stopped asking.<\/p>\n<p>The cabin was still almost an hour away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou follow me,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbsolutely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd don\u2019t disappear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot planning to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We loaded the kids.<\/p>\n<p>Before I closed Cole\u2019s door, he held up his new bottle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll keep it up here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want you looking for it.\u201d I kissed his forehead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeither do I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We pulled back onto the highway.<\/p>\n<p>For the first ten minutes, every pickup truck made my shoulders tense.<\/p>\n<p>Then the traffic thinned.<\/p>\n<p>Mia fell asleep.<\/p>\n<p>Cole did too.<\/p>\n<p>The sky turned orange above the trees.<\/p>\n<p>At one point, I glanced into the rearview mirror.<\/p>\n<p>Cole\u2019s head had fallen sideways against his seat.<\/p>\n<p>His new blue bottle rested safely in his lap.<\/p>\n<p>Behind us, several car lengths back, Danny\u2019s SUV followed.<\/p>\n<p>Same distance.<\/p>\n<p>Same headlights.<\/p>\n<p>An hour earlier, seeing him behind me had meant confusion.<\/p>\n<p>Why wasn\u2019t he coming?<\/p>\n<p>Why wasn\u2019t he moving?<\/p>\n<p>Why wasn\u2019t he protecting us?<\/p>\n<p>Now I understood. He had been protecting us the entire time.<\/p>\n<p>Not in the way I expected, and not in the way that would have looked brave from the outside.<\/p>\n<p>He had done something harder. He had stayed calm while another man bragged about frightening his wife.<\/p>\n<p>He had let me misunderstand him for a few terrible minutes because getting us home safely mattered more than looking like the hero.<\/p>\n<p>At the next light, Danny flashed his headlights once.
