In November 2022, a quiet night in Decatur, Georgia, turned into an extraordinary story of loyalty and courage.<\/p>\n
Casper, a young Great Pyrenees livestock guardian dog, was watching over a small flock of sheep when coyotes appeared near the property.<\/p>\n

Casper and another guardian dog, Daisy, had moved the five sheep toward a protected area as the coyotes approached. But the situation quickly escalated.<\/p>\n

Casper came home.<\/p>\n
He was alive \u2014 but badly wounded.<\/p>\n
His injuries were severe enough that there were initially concerns about whether he could recover. He suffered major wounds to his neck and side, and part of his tail was lost. <\/p>\n
A Community Helped Save Him<\/p>\n
Casper required extensive veterinary treatment.<\/p>\n
LifeLine Animal Project became involved in his recovery, while public attention around his story helped generate support for his care.<\/p>\n
His recovery took time, but the young guardian dog survived.<\/p>\n
And his story didn\u2019t end there.<\/p>\n
More than a year later, Casper was reported to be fully healed and back with his sheep. In 2024, he won the American Farm Bureau Federation\u2019s People\u2019s Choice Pup award after receiving the most votes in the public competition. <\/p>\n
For the people who followed his recovery, it was a fitting ending.<\/p>\n
Casper had simply been doing the job livestock guardian dogs have performed for generations: protecting the animals entrusted to them.<\/p>\n
But on that night in Georgia, he demonstrated just how far that instinct could go.<\/p>\n
