<\/p>\nTomorrow, my grandfather turns 86 years old.<\/p>\n
Sometimes when I look at him ,<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
I honestly wonder which one of us is younger.<\/p>\n
He is still active. He still works every day. And about once a week, he takes care of the yard around his home himself.<\/p>\n
At almost 86 years old.<\/p>\n
Sometimes I watch him working and think to myself:<\/p>\n
This man might actually be stronger than I am.<\/p>\n
But his strength isn\u2019t even the most surprising part of his story.<\/p>\n
There is something about the way he lives that sounds almost unbelievable in 2026.<\/p>\n
In nearly 86 years of life, my grandfather has used a cell phone for only four days.<\/p>\n
Yes \u2014 4 days.<\/p>\n
And I\u2019m actually the person who bought him that phone.<\/p>\n
I thought it would be useful for practical reasons.<\/p>\n
If he went somewhere by car, if he was away from home, or if he ever needed to reach us, he would have a phone in his pocket.<\/p>\n
To me, it seemed completely normal.<\/p>\n
Most of us today won\u2019t even walk to the store without taking our phones.<\/p>\n
So I bought him one.<\/p>\n
He kept it for four days.<\/p>\n
Then he stopped using it.<\/p>\n
Those are the only four days in his entire life that he has ever had a cell phone.<\/p>\n
No smartphone.<\/p>\n
No social media.<\/p>\n
No years spent checking messages and notifications.<\/p>\n
Almost 86 years of life \u2014 and only four days with a phone.<\/p>\n
In 2026, that sounds almost impossible.<\/p>\n
But to him, it\u2019s completely normal.<\/p>\n
If he wants to see someone, life still works much the way it did years ago.<\/p>\n
Only two or three of his old friends are still around.<\/p>\n
They don\u2019t need a WhatsApp group to stay friends.<\/p>\n
They don\u2019t constantly text each other asking, \u201cWhere are you?\u201d<\/p>\n
They\u2019ve known each other for a lifetime.<\/p>\n
They know where to find one another.<\/p>\n
And somehow, they still meet.<\/p>\n
Our family\u2019s old house is still standing, too.<\/p>\n
My grandfather still goes there.<\/p>\n
To me, it\u2019s our old family home.<\/p>\n
But when I watch him return there, I realize that to him it must be something completely different.<\/p>\n
That house holds decades of memories.<\/p>\n
It belongs to a time when people didn\u2019t need to send a message before visiting someone.<\/p>\n
Friends knew where their friends would be.<\/p>\n
People visited each other, sat together and talked face-to-face.<\/p>\n
There was no screen demanding their attention every few minutes.<\/p>\n
My grandfather has worked for practically as long as he can remember.<\/p>\n
Work, movement and responsibility became part of his life when he was very young.<\/p>\n
And what amazes me is that even now, as he approaches 86, he still doesn\u2019t want to stop.<\/p>\n
He works every day.<\/p>\n
He stays active.<\/p>\n
He takes care of the things he can handle himself.<\/p>\n
And once a week, he still takes care of the yard.<\/p>\n
Sometimes he genuinely seems stronger than me.<\/p>\n
And watching him makes me wonder:<\/p>\n
What will our generation be like at 86?<\/p>\n
Will we still have the strength to work?<\/p>\n
Will we still be outside taking care of our homes?<\/p>\n
Will we still have two or three lifelong friends we meet face-to-face?<\/p>\n
And perhaps the biggest question:<\/p>\n
Could our generation live without a phone?<\/p>\n
My grandfather has done it for almost 86 years.<\/p>\n
I bought him one.<\/p>\n
He gave it a chance.<\/p>\n
Four days later, he went back to the life that had worked perfectly well for him without it.<\/p>\n
Technology has given us incredible things and made many parts of life easier.<\/p>\n
But watching my grandfather reminds me that some of the most important connections in life don\u2019t require the internet.<\/p>\n
Friendship.<\/p>\n
Family.<\/p>\n
Work.<\/p>\n
An old house filled with memories.<\/p>\n
A yard you still take care of with your own hands.<\/p>\n
And two or three old friends who still know where to find you.<\/p>\n
Tomorrow, he turns 86.<\/p>\n
When I look at him, I don\u2019t just think about his age.<\/p>\n
I think about everything he has lived through, how much the world has changed during his lifetime, and how simple some parts of his life have remained.<\/p>\n
86 years of life. Only 4 days with a cell phone. And he still works every day.<\/p>\n
And believe me, I still have many more stories about him to tell.<\/p>\n
Stories from a world that feels almost impossible to imagine today.<\/p>\n
I want to tell you about his memories of seeing things we now consider completely ordinary \u2014 including the first television and other technology that once seemed almost unbelievable to him.<\/p>\n
There are stories about his work, his old friends, our old family home, and how everyday life used to work without the technology we now depend on.<\/p>\n
