Carol came to the dedication. She stood in front of that photo a long time, and then she found me and said, at seventy-seven, the hardest sentence of her life: \u201cI judged that man by his shirt for forty years.\u201d I told her the truth, which is that Sam never held it against her, because Sam genuinely believed what he told me the one time I got angry on his behalf, back in 1998, wedding, bucket joke: \u201cBarb, people can only see what a job pays. They can\u2019t see what it\u2019s worth. I know what my nights are worth.\u201d I thought he meant the overtime. He meant the bridge.
